From the land
of the accordion

Roberto Lucanero was born in Recanati in 1971. When he was seven years old, he began to study the piano accordion under the guidance of both his mother, also an accordionist, and the teacher, Edgardo Mugnoz. After his early years of training, he continued his studies with Alessandro Mugnoz, Edgardo’s son, who also gave him lessons in playing the piano, harmony and musical analysis.

In 1987, he joined his teacher’s own group, the "Adamo Volpi Quartet”, and performed with him alongside the great accordionists Wolmer Beltrami and Peppino Principe. In1991, after leaving the Volpi Quartet, he became conductor of the accordion orchestra “Fisorchestra Città di Osimo”.

In 1990, Roberto enrolled with school of drama, art and music (DAMS) at the University of Bologna where he began his studies in musicology, leading to his degree in ethnomusicology, and a dissertation entitled “The diatonic accordion in Central Marche”.

His sojourn in Bologna enabled him to meet and frequent musicians and movie directors whose influence led him to develop his own creativity as an artist. Roberto also began his career as a columnist and essayist, specialising in jazz and folk music.

In 1995, he joined the “Xeno” trio with the clarinettist and composer Roberto Paci Dalò whilst at the same time sealing an artistic bond with the Roman composer Luca Miti. With them, he began to explore areas of music, which until then he had only studied on paper.

In 1996, he began a collaboration with the guitarist Giovanni Seneca with whom he recorded a CD entitled ‘Margini Abitabili” (Ecamlab 1999), with lyrics by Gilberto Severini, a venture in which the singer Rossana Casale also took part. The association of folk music and song writers in the Marche continued – first with the folk revival of the Gruppo di Ricerca and Canto Popolare la Macina, and later with the songwriter Raffaele Mazzei.

In recent years, Roberto Lucanero, either on his own or together with the Lucanero Band, has been the guest of several music festivals including Folkest (Spilinbergo – near Pordenone in Veneto), Zingaria (Biccari – near Foggia in Puglia), Capodanze (Biccari), Reno Folk Festival (Casalecchio di Reno – Bologna), Valfino al Canto (Arsita – Teramo), Carrefour Mondial de l’Accordéon (Montmagny – Québec, Canada), Festitalia (Hamilton – Ontario, Canada), International Accordion Festival (Bridlington – England), Caister Accordion Festival (Caister on Sea, England).

Alongside his commitments as a musician, Roberto is frequently engaged as a lecturer at conferences, making his original research on the diatonic accordion known in both Italy and abroad.
