The re-introduction of the repertoire of traditional music often gets museum-inspired treatment, like a “find”, that gets dusted, separated from the soil in which it was imbedded at the moment of being found and, having been catalogued, is placed in a well-lit show-case. The public enjoys listening to the discovery/music in a respectful silence, and dutifully applauds at the appropriate moment. Lucanero, on the other hand, has found a new way of re-introducing folk music. The extant work of art, the piece of folk music, is identified with the artist, and is mediated by contemporary culture and communicated to the listener. The whole is performed regarding the public as an active part of the event. Roberto together with his accordion becomes the celebrant in a collective rite that can be called dance, public festivity, busking, party, or jam session.
